Dear wine lovers,
As a sommelier, I have had the privilege of tasting many wines, but Catalan summer wines hold a special place in my heart. I would like to share with you some personal impressions.
- Cava: the classic refreshment
Cava, the Catalan sparkling wine, reminds me of a warm summer evening in Girona, sitting on a terrace overlooking the city. A sparkling glass in hand, the scent of citrus in the air: an unforgettable moment.
Suggested dish: serve with french fries, olives and manchego cheese. For me, tasting cava with fresh oysters on the Costa Brava is unrivaled.
- Xarel-lo: the aromatic white wine
I remember a small winery in Penedès where I was able to taste Xarel-lo directly from the producer. The freshness and delicate herbaceous notes were like a walk through a summer citrus garden.
Recommended dishes: Ideal with summer salads with goat cheese and grilled fish. A glass of xarel-lo with a fresh ceviche evokes memories of warm days by the Mediterranean.
- Garnacha Rosé – summer in the glass
A picnic, a basket of tapas and a well-chilled bottle of Garnacha Rosé: that’s how I enjoyed this wine the most. The aromas of strawberries and Mediterranean herbs go perfectly with the relaxed atmosphere of summer.
Recommended dishes: It pairs perfectly with grilled vegetables, salmon or seafood paella. A cold gazpacho also highlights its fresh character.
- Light red wine – fruity and served chilled
A light, chilled red wine? I was skeptical until I tasted a lightly chilled Garnacha with grilled lamb in a small restaurant in Girona. The fruity flavor and freshness opened my eyes.
Recommended dishes: it combines perfectly with lamb chops, chorizo or a generous Spanish omelette. Grilled eggplants with feta cheese are also a delicious option.
My advice: try different wines and create your own summer memories. Enjoy the summer with a glass of Catalan wine in your hand. Cheers.
